What is Garcinia Mangostana?
Garcinia Mangostana (G. Mangostana) is the scientific name for the Purple Mangosteen, known simply as "the mangosteen". The purple mangosteen belongs to the same genus as the other, less widely known, mangosteens, such as:
- the button mangosteen (Garcinia prainiana) or
- the Garcinia madruno (Garcinia madruno).
Where do Mangosteen trees grow?
Mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia.
How tall is a Mangosteen tree?
The tree grows from 7 to 25 m (20–80 ft) tall.
Different parts of the Mangosteen fruit
The rind (exocarp) of the edible Mangosteen fruit is deep reddish purple when ripe.
Botanically an aril, the fragrant edible flesh can be described as sweet and tangy, citrusy with peach flavor and texture.

In the US, you may never see a mangosteen tree although people say that mangosteen trees are beautiful. A mangosteen tree is a tropical evergreen tree, small but quite tall, that is found largely throughout southeast Asia. There are fields and fields of mangosteen trees in many parts of Thailand, for example.
