The mangosteen fruit is a purplish-brown or reddish brown fruit with four large sepals at the top around a thick stem. The deep purple skin, which is also called rind or exocarp, is thick but light that feels hollow. The skin is easily peeled away by just twisting the mangosteen fruit or cutting with a butter knife.
