If you live in southeast Asia, then you usually will see a Mangosteen fruit everywhere. Mangosteen is very common in southeast Asian countries but not in the US and many other countries. You may have seen Mangosteen juices on the shelves in your grocery stores in the US and wondered what is a Mangosteen fruit and what a Mangosteen fruit look like.

What color is a Mangosteen fruit?

A Mangosteen is deep and dark purple on the outside with green sepals and stalk on top and white on the inside. The skin (also called rind or exocarp) color of a Mangosteen can range from more red to more dark purple, almost dark brown or even black.

The top of the Mangosteen fruit is green. It can be any different shades of green color from light green, almost yellow, to dark green. Sometimes, they can even have tints of red color as shown in the picture of Mangosteen fruit above.

The rind of a Mangosteen is not edible but the inside aril is. The aril of a Mangosteen is the fragrant edible flesh that are divided into segments inside the Mangosteen. The flesh aril is described as sweet and tangy, citrusy with peach or lychee flavor and texture.
