Question: A question about chronic stomach pain in a 3 year old?

My 3yo has been having tummy aches for almost 1.5 year. I've taken him to the pedi. Every time I go he says something along the lines of "he's constipated or has acid reflux" which I try to tell him in NOT the case. The last time we went the pedi said milk allergy so he wanted me to take him off of milk for 2 weeks. It's been 3 weeks and if anything the pain has gotten worse. I have no idea what to do because my insurance wont cover a specialist unless the pedi gives a referral. I've tried prevacid, tums, and pepto. I've even tried natural stuff like Mangosteen. Nothing is working. So anyone have any clues that can point me in the right direction?

Answer: As long as I can remember I had bad stomach aches. They didn't happen too frequently but at least a few times a month. No single instance was ever bad enough to require an immediate Dr. appointment.

When I was around 10 maybe the Dr. suggested I take a break from milk (I remember the Lactaid milk in particular- grew in Michigan so milk was a big deal) It didn't help.

They slowed down a little bit when I was teenager but since about 20 it came back strong and in more 'tummy' areas. I was finally diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) by my primary Dr. She seemed to think that all of my previous troubles were early IBS symptoms.

Depending on the individual- most of the IBS treatment is changing foods. Switch things in and out and see what causes it to flare. There are different variations of what symptoms come with IBS and only some can be treated with medication- and its mostly symptom treatment, not cures.

I would be persistent with the Ped. Ask them what else you can do to rule out other problems (They might recommend certain foods to try eliminating) Hopefully they will eventually see that a referral is needed. Can you see another Ped without referral?

On a side note- I had a similar referral problem in my teens. I wentto the Dr. for sore throat type things 12 times in 18 months. Because it was usually last minute that I had to go in I was always seeing different Drs.- Ped's urgent care, Adult Urgent care, which ever PCP was open for smae day visits. Eventually we got a Ped urgent care Dr to finally give us an ENT refferal. I had a huge infected pocket behind my tonsil- I had actually been sick the entire 18 months my symptoms only semi appeared to get better between visits. I had my tonsils removed 4 days after I first met with the ENT. Sometimes you just have to be persistent and your own advocate.
